Welcome

Welcome to the website of Awaken School of Outcome Oriented Psychotherapies Ltd.

Awaken School has taken up the status as a Member Organisation of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) to provide students with a recognised pathway to accreditation as a UKCP Accredited Psychotherapist. We have expanded the number of courses available, and increased the pool of trainers so that students have more options when searching for training.

We now offer Clinical Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Psychotherapy courses in various locations around the country for students to increase their skills and develop exciting new career opportunities. These courses can be combined to work towards accreditation and for placement on the UKCP Register, and the current School pathway meets UKCP training standards. The pathway consists of several strands which a student is required to complete:

1)  4 years post graduate training in psychotherapy (maximum of 50% may be APLd).

2)  Substantial supervised clinical work.

3)  Personal therapy & development.

We provide a series of optional programmes in the first 2 years of training and then compulsory modules in years 3 & 4.

Would you like to use your UKCP training to gain credits towards a MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice?

In addition, we now offer students the chance to combine their UKCP training with gaining credits towards a MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice. Our Clinical Hypnotherapy and NLP programmes have been mapped against University learning outcomes and successful completion of each layer can be used to apply for APL. By completing their UKCP training with Awaken, students presented for accreditation will have only a short step to a MSc if they wish. UKCP registrants, already accredited, can apply to the university for APL of up to 80 credits, and if granted will need to complete 2 distance learning research modules with the University of Teesside School of Health & Social Care (20 credits each), and the dissertation to gain a MSc. 6 students have already embarked on the pathway and we anticipate the first MSc awarded in late 2008. For further information on this programme, please contact the office on the number below.

New Book for Spring 2008 !! - Awaken are very proud to announce that Lisa Wake after stepping down as Chair of UKCP has found the time to put pen to paper and write her first book Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy: A Postmodern Perspective. Published by Routledge as part of their Advancing Theory in Therapy series, the book traces the development from its origins from Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir & Fritz Perls. It places Neurolinguistic Psychotherapy firmly in context by presenting models on the developing personality, attachment and neuroscience and challenges therapists to incorporate a psychodynamic approach within their work. The book uses case studies to illustrate theories and is highly recommended for both accredited psychotherapists and students in their final 2 years of training.

"At last, a book series that will help to make the ideal of effective continuing professional development in the fields of psychotherapy and counselling more of a reality. Without being partisan or requiring an unrealstically high level of existing knowledge, the books offer a unique opportunity for experienced practitioners and advanced students to encounter the cutting edge of theory in their particular theoretical model."

Andrew Samuels, Professor of Analytical Psychology - University of Essex.

"Lisa Wake brings heart, soul, intellect and integrity to the emerging discipline of NLP psychotherapy. She not only brings together what has been done and written before in the area of NLP and psychotherapy, but adds new distinctions and understandings. Very readable and human while maintaining a professional tone throughout."

Bill O'Hanlon, author of Taproots, Change 101 and An Uncommon Casebook.

"It's an important contribution to the field for serious students of NLP".

Penny Tompkins.

Now published by Routledge, copies can be ordered through Amazon or from the School and to download information on the book, please click here, to download a short summary, please click here.

Letter from the Chair of UKCP

At the UKCP AGM in March, there was a lot of discussion about the forthcoming Statutory Regulation and the implications for students, registrants and psychotherapy in general. Preliminary discussions between the government and interested parties are under way with potentially far reaching consequences for certain modalities. The following is a letter from the Chair of UKCP James Antrican and another letter which he would like sent by as many people as possible to their MP. Please download copies of the letter and act as you see fit

Chair's letter.

Letter to MPs.

Following on from the letter, you will understand that Statutory Regulation has the potential to relegate certain modalities from psychotherapy into complementary therapies. This will mean that students who graduate from those schools will no longer be eligible to call themselves psychotherapists. At Awaken School we are actively taking steps that will ensure that our registrants will continue to be able to call themselves psychotherapists.

For those students who are concerned, please feel free to contact us at the school where we'd be happy to answer any questions

New CPD courses for Northern Ireland

Awaken School is pleased to be able to offer a series of Spring Short Courses in Northern Ireland themed around the Therapeutic Use of Creative Media. The courses will be of interest to practicing counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as to individuals interested in experiencing the power of the therapeutic application of creative media for themselves.  During each of these courses, which will take the form of experiential workshops, there will be the opportunity to enhance and extend pre-existing skills as well as to develop skills in new areas. Each Short Course will be 12 hours long and will be delivered over 3 evenings from 5.30 till 9.30pm

NHPC & NRHP Merger - A number of Registrants and students have contacted us regarding the NHPC/NRHP merger asking whether they should move their membership into the new organisation. While we make no comment on the merger, we would like to advise students and registrants of their options.

Students - For those students on the pathway to UKCP accreditation, membership of an organisation like NHPC or NRHP is entirely optional. What is compulsory is that you are a member of a training organisation such as Awaken School or Beeleaf. For those students who are on the pathway, and are not a member of a training organisation, please contact the school as soon as possible to rectify the situation.

Registrants - For those who have been accredited, it was always assumed that you had to join a UKCP listing organisation such as NHPC or NRHP and leave your training organisation. After discussions with UKCP Registration Board, the correct position is that registrants can be a member of any Section organisation and it could equally be with either Awaken or Beeleaf. With that in mind, both Awaken School and Beeleaf are now accepting applications from registrants who want to move their UKCP registration. To find out more, either contact Mark in the Awaken Schol office on 01642 714702 or download and complete the following application form with code of ethics and CPD policy. For those who want to consider membership of Beeleaf, please download their form and contact Pam Gawler-Wright using pam@beeleaf.com
